Why Canadians Love Mexico

Mexico is one of the most popular tourist destinations for Canadians, after the United States. Canadians have an affinity for Mexico for several reasons.

1. Weather

In contrast to Canada, areas on the coast of Mexico generally have warm weather all year round, with a dry and rainy season. Mexico City and the highlands can have chilly days and nights. Overall though, Mexico is a lot warmer and sunnier year-round than Canada. This weather, combined with Mexico’s beautiful beaches creates an ideal getaway. The beaches near Playa del Carmen, for example, look like the ideal beach with smooth white sand and sparkly, turquoise water.

There are many Canadian “snowbirds” in Mexico, a term for people from northern regions that spend their winters in southern countries, such as Mexico. This allows them to avoid the cold weather, rain, and snow of winter in Canada.

2. The Food

Authentic Mexican food can be harder to find in Canada. Some memorable meals you’ll find are fresh fish and shrimp, handmade corn or flour tortillas, and carnitas (a form of shredded pork).

Street vendors sell fresh fruits such as mangos and papaya, often with the option of salt or chili powder as a topping. The amazing fresh fruits found in Mexico all year round are a great advantage compared to Canada. Local businesses and markets have fresh produce and meats, often for very affordable prices.

3. Sightseeing

In Mexico, many of the cities have a historic center with a walkable area through nearby attractions such as restaurants, shops, or buildings with interesting architecture such as churches. This is in contrast to Canadian cities, of which many don’t have pedestrian-only streets.

Mexico also has a rich history that remains viewable to tourists. Canadians may want to visit some of the many lasting ruins of the ancient Aztec and Maya civilizations, or museums that preserve artifacts from these cultures.

4. The Nature

Many Canadians love the outdoors and exploring nature. Mexico offers outdoor adventures with amazing new sights to behold. Mexico has stunning landscapes that include mountains, beaches, tropical forests, waterfalls, cenotes, and more.

Its wildlife is an equally fascinating range of flora and fauna. On land, you may see howler or spider monkeys, parrots, hummingbirds, or lizards. In the ocean, Mexico has many species of whales such as blue whales, humpback whales, fin whales, and gray whales. Other marine animals include dolphins, sea turtles, fish, and manatees.

5. Lack of Covid Restrictions

In recent years, another one of the draws of Mexico has been its open borders and lack of Covid entry requirements. Apart from certain locations such as banks, government buildings, and large supermarkets, mask-wearing was never enforced on a large scale in Mexico.
